I've played this song for many years but never knew why I couldn't quite get it to sound at least similar to John Prine. After seeing him play it live I finally knew why. He plays it with a capo on the 7th fret! It's the only acoustic song I know with the capo that high. I thought Never Going Back Again by Fleetwood Mac had the highest capo placement at the 6th fret. Nope. Prine wins that one! It's the only way to play the same fingerstyle patterns as he does. If you try it anywhere else on the neck you have to use a different fingerstyle pattern that doesn't quite sound right.

I saw him back in 98. I was only 19 but I was raised on his music. I learned that he was performing at the theater a few blocks away from the homeless shelter that I was staying at. I had to to see him. 3 years later he left us. I am very grateful that I got to see him. I own 300+ phonograph records, mostly from my childhood.

The Live Tapes songs are the best ! I remember anticipating the studio versions but was disappointed that they were so over produced. Still great writing but lacking the raw emotion of Live Tape! Still tugs at the ❤

I live in New Zealand. Got to see Mavis at Womad It was a hundred percent of spiritual experience for me I knew the lyrics to everyone if her songs I sung my heart out As soon as the concert finished. The woman standing in front of me turn it around and kissed me It was a lovely outdoor venue. Which is a park set up for concerts People come up to me afterwards from the back of the arena Saying was that you we could hear you sing singing over the PA. I said oh I'm sorry. No it's ok you have a beautiful voice. You got to sing with one of your heroes God bless you Mavis 😢❤️♐😢

First tune is a strathspey called “Mary Scott”, followed by the infamous “Tullochgorum” strathspey with its infinite variations.

It’s so fun to play along with their old recordings, the only issue is having to tune the fiddle a half-step sharper than standard! As I’m assuming Mr. Gavin did for years, or at least he maybe had a special fiddle(s) reserved for the band. Dervish is another band that records & performs nearly all their stuff a half-step sharp.. but De Danann also tuned a whole step sharp or flat on certain tracks, as well. Thank God for the Amazing Slow Downer app, it’s a blessing. On the album “Tunes” by Sharon Shannon, Frankie Gavin, Mike McGoldrick and Jim Murray, they’re all playing predominantly in De Danann’s 1/2-step sharp tuning. Presumably Sharon has an appropriately pitched box, Mike has the right key of flutes and whistles, and Jim uses capos. So if you’re okay with alternate tunings, and more importantly, if your instrument is okay with that, it’s a wonderful feeling playing sharp! SO bright and vibrant..don’t know what it is! But the tension on the fiddle stresses ME out a bit.

Interesting observation on what they are switching up. I played a rendition of turkey in the straw that a bluegrass player posted on YT for my daughter (an NYY opera performance student) and she said he was playing on the upbeat which I never noticed until a music theory student pointed it out.
